UPSC IES Exam Pattern

The Indian Economic Service (IES) exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), consists of several stages and papers. Here’s a detailed overview of the exam pattern:

1. Written Examination

The written examination consists of six papers:

  1. General English (Paper I)
    • Duration: 3 hours
    • Type: Descriptive
    • Topics: Essay writing, comprehension, precis writing, grammar, and usage.
  2. General Studies (Paper II)
    • Duration: 3 hours
    • Type: Descriptive
    • Topics: Current events, Indian polity, geography, history of India, general science, and general knowledge.
  3. Economics Paper I (General Economics-I)
    • Duration: 3 hours
    • Type: Descriptive
    • Topics: Microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic thought, international economics, and public finance.
  4. Economics Paper II (General Economics-II)
    • Duration: 3 hours
    • Type: Descriptive
    • Topics: Economic development and growth, Indian economy, and globalization and trade.
  5. Economics Paper III (General Economics-III)
    • Duration: 3 hours
    • Type: Descriptive
    • Topics: Statistical and econometric methods, theory of consumer demand, theory of production and cost, theory of firm and market structure, and pricing practices.
  6. Indian Economics (Paper IV)
    • Duration: 3 hours
    • Type: Descriptive
    • Topics: Indian agriculture, Indian industry, labor, trade, and finance.

2. Viva Voce (Interview)

  • Duration: Approximately 30 to 45 minutes
  • Type: Oral Examination
  • Topics: The interview assesses the candidate’s personality, understanding of economics, and general awareness. It evaluates communication skills, knowledge of current affairs, and the candidate’s suitability for a career in the Indian Economic Service.

Key Points:

  • Total Marks: The written examination carries 1,200 marks, and the interview carries 200 marks.
  • Qualifying Marks: Candidates need to clear the minimum qualifying marks in each paper and overall to be considered for the interview.
  • Final Selection: The final selection is based on the combined performance in the written examination and the interview.

Preparation Tips:

  1. Understand the Syllabus: Thoroughly understand the syllabus for each paper and prepare accordingly.
  2. Practice Descriptive Writing: Since the exam is descriptive, practice writing essays, precis, and answers to improve clarity and coherence.
  3. Stay Updated: Keep abreast of current events, economic issues, and developments in India and globally.
  4. Revise Regularly: Regularly revise key concepts, theories, and current affairs.
  5. Mock Tests and Previous Papers: Solve previous years’ papers and take mock tests to familiarize yourself with the exam pattern and improve time management.
