UPSC Mains Essay Paper Syllabus

The essay paper syllabus broadly covers a range of topics, and candidates are required to write two essays.

Here is the general pattern and guidelines for the UPSC Mains Essay Paper:

Paper-I:

  • Candidates are required to write two essays, selecting one from each of the sections A and B.
  • Each essay should be about 1,000-1,200 words.
  • The total marks allocated for the essay paper is 250 (125 marks for each essay).
  • Candidates are given a choice of topics in each section.

Section A:

  1. Farming has lost the ability to be a source of subsistence for majority of farmers in India.
  2. Impact of the new economic measures on fiscal ties between the Union and States in India.
  3. Destiny of a nation is shaped in its classrooms.
  4. Has the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) lost its relevance in a multipolar world?
  5. Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.

Section B:

  1. Truth is lived, not taught.
  2. Customary morality cannot be a guide to modern life.
  3. “The past’ is a permanent dimension of human consciousness and values.
  4. “A people that values its privileges above its principles loses both.”
  5. “Reality does not conform to the ideal, but confirms it.”

Candidates are expected to articulate their thoughts coherently, present ideas in a logical sequence, and express themselves clearly. The topics are broad and may require a multidimensional analysis, drawing from various fields of knowledge.
