UPSC Mains Subjects

The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Main Examination consists of nine papers, out of which two papers are qualifying in nature and seven papers are considered for ranking. Here are the subjects included in the UPSC Mains examination:

  1. Qualifying Papers: a. Paper A – Indian Language: Candidates need to choose one Indian language included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. This paper is not compulsory for candidates from the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim, as well as candidates with hearing impairment. b. Paper B – English: Candidates need to write an essay, comprehension, and precise writing.
  2. Papers for Ranking: a. Paper I – Essay: Candidates need to write essays on multiple topics. b. Paper II – General Studies I: This paper includes topics such as Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society. c. Paper III – General Studies II: This paper includes topics such as Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations. d. Paper IV – General Studies III: This paper includes topics such as Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management. e. Paper V – General Studies IV: This paper focuses on Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude. f. Paper VI – Optional Subject Paper I: Candidates have to choose one optional subject from the list provided by UPSC. This paper is the first part of the optional subject examination. g. Paper VII – Optional Subject Paper II: This is the second part of the optional subject examination.

Candidates need to choose their optional subjects wisely based on their interests, background, and preparation level. The optional subjects cover a wide range of disciplines including literature, history, geography, political science, sociology, economics, mathematics, and more.
