Tiger Reserve in Tamil nadu-UPSC Notes

Tamil Nadu is home to several important tiger reserves aimed at conserving the endangered tiger population and their habitats. One of the prominent tiger reserves in Tamil Nadu is:

  1. Mudumalai Tiger Reserve: Located in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is one of the oldest and most well-known tiger reserves in the state. It is part of the larger Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including a significant population of tigers, elephants, leopards, and various other species of flora and fauna.

Apart from Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, there are other protected areas in Tamil Nadu that contribute to tiger conservation efforts, although they might not be designated solely as tiger reserves. These include:

  1. Anamalai Tiger Reserve: Though primarily located in the neighboring state of Kerala, a part of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve extends into Tamil Nadu. It is situated in the Western Ghats and is known for its diverse wildlife, including tigers, elephants, and endemic species.
  2. Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve: Located in the southern part of Tamil Nadu, this reserve is one of the largest protected areas in the state. It encompasses the Kalakkad Wildlife Sanctuary and Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary and is recognized for its biodiversity and tiger conservation efforts.

These tiger reserves play a crucial role in the conservation of not just tigers but also the entire ecosystem, contributing significantly to the state’s biodiversity and environmental sustainability efforts.
