TNPSC Group 2 Changes: An Overview of the Latest Exam Pattern

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) Group 2 exam is one of the most competitive and sought-after exams in the state of Tamil Nadu. Every year, lakhs of aspirants appear for the exam to secure a job in the government sector. The TNPSC Group 2 exam is conducted in two stages – Preliminary and Main – and comprises multiple-choice questions.

However, in recent years, the TNPSC has made a few changes to the Group 2 exam pattern to make it more relevant and up-to-date. In this article, we will discuss the changes made in the TNPSC Group 2 exam pattern and what it means for the aspirants.

  1. Introduction of Two Papers

Earlier, the TNPSC Group 2 exam had only one paper with multiple-choice questions. However, from this year onwards, the Group 2 exam will be conducted in two papers – Paper I and Paper II. Both the papers will be conducted on the same day, and aspirants will have three hours to attempt each paper.

Paper I will comprise questions from General Studies and Aptitude and Mental Ability Test. Paper II will include questions from General Tamil/General English.

  1. Weightage of Papers

Earlier, the TNPSC Group 2 exam had a single paper with a weightage of 300 marks. However, with the introduction of two papers, the weightage of each paper has been reduced to 150 marks. Aspirants will have to score a minimum of 90 marks out of 300 to qualify for the Mains exam.

  1. Change in Syllabus

With the introduction of Paper I and Paper II, the TNPSC has also made changes in the syllabus. The General Studies paper will now comprise questions from History and Culture of India and Tamil Nadu, Indian Polity, Indian Economy, Geography of India, and Environmental Science. Aptitude and Mental Ability Test paper will remain the same.

In Paper II, General Tamil/General English, questions will be based on the language, literature, authors, poets, and correspondences.

  1. Negative Marking

The TNPSC Group 2 exam did not have negative marking earlier. However, from this year, the TNPSC has announced negative marking for both Paper I and Paper II. For every wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted. Aspirants must be careful while attempting questions and should only answer those questions they are sure about.
