CMS Exam Pattern: What You Need to Know to Win the Test

Aspiring candidates for the CMS Exam, also known as the Combined Medical Services Examination, must have a clear understanding of the exam pattern for better preparation. The CMS Exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment of medical officers in various central government organizations such as railways, hospitals, and health departments.

The CMS Exam is conducted annually and has two stages: the written examination and the personality test/interview. The written examination is further divided into two papers:

Paper I: This paper consists of general abilities such as General Medicine, Pediatrics, and Preventive and Social Medicine. It comprises 120 MCQs with a maximum score of 250 marks.

Paper II: This paper covers surgery, gynecology, and obstetrics. It also carries 120 MCQs and a maximum score of 250 marks.

Both papers are conducted in a computer-based mode. Each correct answer carries one mark, and one-third of a mark is deducted for each incorrect response. There is no penalty for unanswered questions.

However, candidates must remember that passing in both papers is mandatory, and they need to secure the minimum qualifying marks set by UPSC.

The qualifying marks criteria:

• The minimum qualifying marks for MBC paper I and MBC Paper II: 60%.

• The minimum qualifying marks for OBC candidates: 55% in both papers.

• The minimum qualifying marks for general category candidates: 50% in both papers.

After successfully clearing the written examination, candidates must appear for the personality test/interview. This is conducted to test the candidate’s personality traits, communication skills, and leadership qualities. The personality test carries 100 marks.

In addition to the above factors, candidates must also keep the following tips in mind to crack the CMS Exam:

• Refer to the official UPSC website for the latest updates on the exam pattern.

• Understand the syllabus and prepare notes accordingly.

• Practice MCQs and previous year question papers to increase speed and accuracy.

• Stay updated with current affairs in the medical field.

• Allocate sufficient time for revision and take regular mock tests to gauge your progress.
