TNPSC Assistant Engineer Civil Exam Syllabus

The TNPSC Assistant Engineer (Civil) exam syllabus is designed to assess the candidate’s knowledge in civil engineering and general studies. The syllabus is divided into two papers: Paper I, which focuses on Civil Engineering, and Paper II, which covers General Studies and Aptitude. Below is the detailed syllabus for each paper:

Paper I: Civil Engineering

1. Structural Engineering:

  • Strength of Materials: Stress, strain, elastic constants, bending moments, shear forces, torsion, deflection of beams, theory of columns, and energy principles.
  • Theory of Structures: Analysis of determinate and indeterminate structures, influence lines, arches, cables, and basics of matrix methods.
  • Reinforced Concrete Structures: Design principles of concrete structures, limit state design, design of beams, slabs, columns, footings, and retaining walls.
  • Steel Structures: Design of structural steel members, bolted and welded connections, design of tension and compression members, beams, and roof trusses.

2. Environmental Engineering:

  • Water Supply Engineering: Sources of water, water demand, quality of water, treatment processes, distribution systems, and water supply in buildings.
  • Sewage Disposal and Sanitation: Sewerage systems, sewage characteristics, treatment methods, disposal of treated effluent, and sludge management.
  • Solid Waste Management: Classification, collection, transportation, processing, and disposal methods.
  • Air and Noise Pollution: Sources, effects, control measures, and environmental impact assessment.

3. Water Resources Engineering:

  • Fluid Mechanics: Properties of fluids, fluid statics, kinematics, dynamics, flow through pipes, and open channel flow.
  • Hydrology: Hydrological cycle, rainfall, runoff, hydrographs, flood estimation, and ground water hydrology.
  • Irrigation Engineering: Types of irrigation, methods, water requirements of crops, irrigation efficiencies, and design of canals.
  • Hydraulic Structures: Design of weirs, dams, spillways, energy dissipation, and river training works.

4. Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering:

  • Soil Properties: Classification, permeability, compaction, consolidation, shear strength, and soil testing.
  • Bearing Capacity: Shallow and deep foundations, pile foundations, and design of foundations.
  • Earth Pressure and Retaining Structures: Types of earth pressure, Rankine’s and Coulomb’s theories, design of retaining walls.

5. Transportation Engineering:

  • Highway Planning and Design: Road classification, geometric design, pavement design, and traffic engineering.
  • Railway Engineering: Permanent way components, geometric design of tracks, signaling, and interlocking.
  • Airport Engineering: Planning, design of runways, taxiways, and terminal buildings.
  • Harbor Engineering: Types of harbors, breakwaters, and docks.

6. Surveying:

  • Surveying Techniques: Chain surveying, compass surveying, leveling, and theodolite surveying.
  • Remote Sensing and GIS: Basics of remote sensing, satellite imagery, and GIS applications in civil engineering.

7. Building Materials and Construction Management:

  • Building Materials: Properties of construction materials like bricks, stones, concrete, timber, and steel.
  • Construction Practices: Brick masonry, stone masonry, concrete technology, and construction of RCC buildings.
  • Construction Management: Project planning, scheduling, PERT and CPM, quality control, safety, and construction equipment.

Paper II: General Studies

1. General Studies (Degree Standard):

  • General Science: Basics of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology; Environmental Science.
  • Current Events: National and International events, Indian Polity, Indian Economy, and Geography.
  • History and Culture of India and Tamil Nadu:
    • Ancient, Medieval, and Modern History of India.
    • Cultural Heritage of Tamil Nadu.
  • Indian Polity:
    • Constitution of India, political system, public administration, governance, and Panchayati Raj.
  • Indian Economy:
    • Economic planning, industrial growth, poverty, and unemployment issues.
    • Social schemes and development administration in Tamil Nadu.
  • Geography:
    • Physical geography, economic geography, and social geography of India and Tamil Nadu.
  • Indian National Movement:
    • Freedom struggle, role of Tamil Nadu in the Indian National Movement.

2. Aptitude and Mental Ability (SSLC Standard):

  • Basic Arithmetic: Number system, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Logical Reasoning: Analogies, series, coding-decoding, and logical deduction.
  • Data Interpretation: Interpretation of graphs, charts, and tables.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Simple and compound interest, profit and loss, time and work, time and distance.

Exam Structure:

  • Paper I: Civil Engineering (300 Marks, 3 hours)
  • Paper II: General Studies (200 Marks, 2 hours)
  • Interview: 70 Marks (For candidates who qualify in the written examination)

The exam assesses both the technical expertise of the candidates in Civil Engineering and their general awareness, aptitude, and problem-solving skills.
