IPS Exam Pattern

The Indian Police Service (IPS) exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. The exam pattern for the IPS is part of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by UPSC. Here’s the general pattern:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims):
    • Objective type questions (MCQs)
    • Consists of two papers:
      • General Studies Paper I: Covers topics like current events, history, geography, economics, polity, etc.
      • General Studies Paper II (CSAT): Tests aptitude and comprehension skills.
  2. Main Examination (Mains):
    • Descriptive type questions
    • Consists of 9 papers:
      • Paper A: One of the Indian languages chosen by the candidate.
      • Paper B: English
      • Essay
      • General Studies I: Indian heritage and culture, history, and geography of the world and society.
      • General Studies II: Governance, constitution, polity, social justice, and international relations.
      • General Studies III: Technology, economic development, biodiversity, environment, security, and disaster management.
      • General Studies IV: Ethics, integrity, and aptitude.
      • Optional Subject Paper I
      • Optional Subject Paper II
  3. Personality Test (Interview):
    • Candidates who qualify the mains are called for a personal interview.
    • Tests candidates’ personality, communication skills, general knowledge, and the ability to handle various situations.
  4. Medical Examination:
    • Candidates who clear the interview undergo a medical examination to ensure they are fit for the job.
