UPSC Combined Medical Services Examination Syllabus

The Combined Medical Services (CMS) Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. It is a competitive examination for recruiting medical officers in various government organizations, including the Indian Railways, Indian Ordnance Factories Health Service, Central Health Service, etc. The syllabus for the UPSC CMS Examination is divided into two parts: Paper-I and Paper-II.

Paper-I:

    • Gastro-intestinal
    • Genito-urinary
    • Neurology
    • Hematology
    • Endocrinology
    • Metabolic disorders
    • Infectious/Communicable Diseases
    • Diseases of the skin (Dermatology)
  2. Pediatrics:
    • Common childhood emergencies
    • Basic newborn care
    • Normal developmental milestones
    • Accidents and poisonings in children
    • Immunization in children
  3. Preventive and Social Medicine:
    • Social and community medicine
    • Concept of Health, Disease, and Preventive Medicine
    • Health Administration and Planning
    • General Epidemiology
    • Demography and Health Statistics
    • Communicable Diseases

Paper-II:

  1. Surgery:
    • General Surgery
    • Urological Surgery
    • Thoracic surgery
    • Ophthalmology
    • Orthopedic surgery
    • Otorhinolaryngology (ENT)
    • Ophthalmology
    • Traumatology
  2. Gynecology & Obstetrics:
    • Obstetrics
    • Gynecology
    • Family Planning and Maternal and Child Health
  3. Preventive and Social Medicine:
    • Social and Community Medicine
    • Concept of Health, Disease, and Preventive Medicine
    • Health Administration and Planning
    • General Epidemiology
    • Demography and Health Statistics
    • Communicable Diseases

The examination consists of two papers, each carrying a maximum of 250 marks. The duration of each paper is 2 hours. Both papers are objective type and contain multiple-choice questions. There is a negative marking of one-third of the marks assigned to a particular question for incorrect answers.
